FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Southington, Connecticut – REM Surface Engineering selected for a Phase I contract through the Department of Energy and Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program.  REM Surface Engineering’s proposal, “Internal Surface Finishing of Additively Manufactured RF Components for Fusion Reactor Applications,” is being awarded $200,000 (SBIR) Phase I contract from the DOE, a first with the Agency, as proposed during their FY23.2 Phase I topic C56-29A for Enabling Technologies in Plasma Heating, Fueling, and Disruption Mitigation with focus on Advanced Plasma Heating and Current Drive. SBIR awards are highly competitive research-based programs that provide U.S. small businesses the opportunity to engage in cutting edge research, development, and commercialization.  Phase I of the SBIR program emphasizes proving technical feasibility to government end-users; the R&D of the proposed technology to perform initial process development and testing (Federal Technology Readiness Level 2-3); and allows small businesses to begin to grow new, innovative solutions to address emerging federal and commercial needs.

“It is incredibly exciting to see REM’s surface finishing expertise applied to new additive manufacturing applications and industries, particularly an area of study as important as plasma fusion and clean energy.  This award falls directly in line with REM’s mission and core values as we look for ways to use our technology to improve not just metals, but the world around us. I’m proud to see REM’s ongoing partnerships and collaborations with a growing list of government agencies via the SBIR Program.   This award represents our ninth SBIR in just over four years, and our first partnership with the Department of Energy.”, says Nathan Michaud, Vice President of Strategy.

REM Surface Engineering expresses their sincere appreciation to industry partners for their support: MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center, Quadrus Corporation, Elementum3D, and NASA Marshall Space Flight Center.
